Inventor turns 1960s bumper car into the world's fastest and the speeds it can reach defy belief

What happens when you mix British engineering genius with a dash of madness? You get the world’s fastest bumper car.

A once slow-moving 1960s fairground relic has been transformed into a fire-breathing, record-breaking machine. Equipped with a 600cc sports bike engine pushing out 100 horsepower, this modified dodgem leaves the amusement park far behind—both literally and figuratively.

The incredible creation, built by British engineer and inventor Colin Furze, was featured on the BBC’s Top Gear. Known for his wild experiments—including a flying hoverbike and the world’s fastest mobility scooter—Furze outdid himself with this project.

He took the original dodgem shell, kept its vintage proportions, and gave it a serious power boost. To keep it roadworthy (and slightly safer), he added a custom roll hoop and strengthened the chassis.

When it came time to test the beast, Top Gear’s legendary driver The Stig took the wheel. On the runway, the dodgem smashed through expectations, reaching an astonishing verified average of 100.336 mph, with a top speed of 107 mph.

To put that in perspective, that’s about twenty times faster than the average fairground bumper car. Guinness World Records officials were on site to confirm it—making Furze’s dodgem the official fastest bumper car in the world.

This extraordinary build shows what happens when creativity meets horsepower. With enough imagination, even a forgotten fairground relic can become a piece of engineering history.
