The Algorithm of Shadows: When Love and Wealth Become Traps

Part 1 – The Invitation
The neon skyline of New Chicago pulsed like a living organism - towers glittering with gold windows, flying vehicles darting between them, and holographic billboards whispering promises of a life everyone secretly craved.
But beneath the shimmer, in the alleys between skyscrapers, the city was drowning in silence and secrets.
Alex Raymond had built his empire on those secrets. He wasn’t just a billionaire tech magnate - he was the creator of NeuroCore, a neural implant rumored to reprogram emotions, memories, even choices. The world worshiped him as a savior. Yet in his penthouse above the clouds, Alex carried a loneliness that even infinite wealth couldn’t erase.
And then, there was Evelyn Cross.
She entered his life like a code that didn’t belong - mysterious, fearless, with eyes that seemed to read the shadows he hid behind his flawless smile. She wasn’t interested in his money or inventions; she wanted answers. Evelyn believed NeuroCore wasn’t just a tool of healing - it was a weapon of control.
The first time they met, she whispered,
"Do you ever wonder if your love, your ambition, even your pain... are actually yours? Or are they lines of code someone else wrote?"
That question haunted Alex.
Because buried in his own subconscious was a truth he hadn’t dared face: NeuroCore was not only rewriting lives - it was rewriting his.
The invitation came on a night drenched in rain. An encrypted message lit up Evelyn’s wrist-com:
“Midnight. Abandoned subway terminal. Come alone. The truth is ready to reveal itself.”
When she arrived, the station was alive with flickering lights and broken advertisements from a world that no longer existed. In the shadows, a figure waited -hood drawn low, voice steady.
"Evelyn, you were right. NeuroCore is not healing minds. It’s harvesting them. The wealthiest clients aren’t buying therapy; they’re buying personalities, desires, even destinies. Entire lives are being auctioned in secret.”
Before Evelyn could respond, the figure pressed a small data chip into her hand. “Take this to Alex. He’s the only one who can stop it. But be careful - his memories are not his own.”
A sudden crash of metal echoed. Drones swarmed in, their red sensors glowing like predators in the dark. The figure was dragged into the shadows. Evelyn ran, clutching the chip, her heartbeat louder than the storm above.
When she finally reached Alex’s penthouse, drenched and trembling, she locked eyes with him.
"If you truly love me, Alex… prove it. Because this chip might tell me whether that love is real - or just another program you wrote."
And for the first time in his empire of certainty, Alex felt his soul fracture.
Because deep down, he didn’t know the answer.
