One of the most popular ELR cartridges of the past 100 years has been the .50 BMG, not just for its insane muzzle velocity and energy, but for ballistic energy retention downrange, which enables it to effectively dispatch not just live targets but also engines, machinery and other materiel.

That being the case, we’re here to shed some light on a little known aspect of extreme long-range rifle shooting: the transonic zone, and why its impacts on long-range shooting make some cartridges, like .408 CheyTac better at truly extreme ranges, in excess of 2000 yards.

What Is the Transonic Zone and What Are Its Implications for Extreme Long-Range Shooting?

The transonic zone is the zone buffering subsonic and supersonic speeds, generally considered as between Mach .8 and Mach 1.2, or for shooters, roughly 900 FPS to 1350 FPS.

In this zone of speed, a body will encounter unpredictable drag forces that put a considerable level of stress on the structure.

In the transonic zone, shock waves are produced that create even more drag downstream of the body, be it a bullet or an aircraft. These disturbances place a great deal of pressure on the structure experiencing transonic speeds.

Also notably, a phenomenon called “wave drag” also manifests itself, which is a type of pressure drag due to compressibility of the medium through which the body is moving, and the forces can be quite extreme.

As a result of these processes, a bullet encountering the transonic zone as it decelerates will be subject to sudden and pronounced forces of drag that can be surprisingly inconsistent and unpredictable.

The biggest problem here is accuracy. Spin-stability is the primary driver of accuracy with respect to a bullet; these drag forces arising from the shock waves experienced in the transonic zone can create minor aberrations that adversely impact bullet flight.

In other words, the transonic zone can create small irregularities in bullet flight and thereby accuracy. The takeaway from this is that a bullet that remains supersonic longer, ideally, all the way to the target, will be inherently more accurate if you hold all other factors equal.

So now we come back to .408 CheyTac ammo One of the noteworthy aspects of this cartridge is that the bullet will remain supersonic for longer than .50 BMG, which at truly extreme ranges, say, greater than 2000 yards, it will remain slightly more accurate.

On larger targets, like materiel, this might not be a sticking point. But on man-sized or smaller targets, it certainly comes into sharper focus, and it is one of the main arguments that has been made before the military regarding the serviceability of .50 BMG and .408 CT in sniper rifles.

The long and short of it is this: technically, a cartridge like .408 CheyTac that fires a bullet that will remain supersonic for longer, will exhibit greater accuracy than one that enters the transonic zone sooner.
